Amazon and Alibaba competing for customers in Europe

According to eMarketer’s article last week, Amazon’s and Alibaba’s competition for Western European online retail customers is getting intense.

Amazon is a favourite to capture a greater consumer base by taking the full advantage of broad product selection, superior consumer understanding and of course Amazon Prime. Already over 50% of internet users e.g. in UK, Germany and Italy have an Amazon Prime account.

In meanwhile, Alibaba is concentrating on Chinese consumers in Europe by focusing on mobile paying app AliPay, and trying to tempt European brands to sell their products on AliExpress.

We don’t know which one of these two will control online retail markets in Western Europe and Nordics in near future. One thing we know: both of them are investing heavily and entries to new markets will lead to massive changes in every industry. Therefore also Nordic brands must have a plan to re-shape their operations to match the new retail landscape.
